Retro kitchen curtains can be a style from the days of “I Love Lucy” to the 60s, 70s and even the early 80s. It’s completely relative so you might prefer one style from a specific era. It’s actually quite fun and enjoyable to decorate the kitchen from another era. Some people take their design to extremes and completely decorate their entire kitchens to mimic the early baby boomer years. It’s certainly all fun and we’ll post three retro fabrics from the retro days. The problem with retro curtains is the availability as finding them can be quite difficult. There are some merchants that do have them and often times you can find them in online auctions. If you are able to sew then your best bet would be to buy the fabric and to sew the kitchen curtain yourself.

The 1950s were beautiful years for fashion. People were relieved that world war II ended with an American victory and America began to prosper greatly. This positive energy naturally made it’s way to the kitchen and kitchen design. Bolder more colorful fabrics were hung as curtains it was after all the Elvis years. Homemakers were more jolly with more bread coming in. And because of this new happiness and wealth, beautiful cheerful curtains were designed. Colors were vivid and depicted items and life in a new light. Short skirts were in and so were shorter aprons.

The 1960s brought on more change and more liberalization. Art finally made it’s way to the kitchen. Where the kitchen was seen as a place to basically eat quietly in the past has now turned to an area of the home where heated debates began. Debates about everything from civil rights to war and art. Women also showed off their new found freedoms by decorating their kitchens with curtains that were only too radical a few years ago. Rebellion in the kitchen was a reality.

The 1970s things began to mellow out and the disco years were born. Bell bottoms were in and this groovy style also made its way to the kitchen. Brown and orange were very popular and so were innovative floral patterns. The kitchen continued to change and today’s retro stools were in style back. It’s good to feel a little nostalgia and the right era retro kitchen curtains will give you that feeling every time you step foot inside the kitchen. Finding these kinds of fabric is not so easy but they will be worth it once you find something to takes you back to memory lane.
