Modern Kitchen Basics

Modern kitchens are probably one of the most difficult kitchen designs to choose, especially for European designs. So many customizations are needed from cabinets, shelves to counter tops and even lighting. Some custom work that is designed by talented designers who specialize in modern kitchen design is truly breathtaking. One can’t help but wonder though that a modern kitchen is only modern for so long. This is the conclusion one gets when they see several models of these sophisticated kitchens in showrooms. The main elements of their design are glossiness, lacquer finish, glass, aluminum, sleekness and linear dimensions. Rarely will you see wood in it’s natural form. These kitchens certainly don’t have the charm of old world kitchens that use hardwoods naturally. And this is actually the selling point of a modern kitchen. This type of design is often part of the overall interior design of the home. Almost always in conformity with the entire architecture of the home.

When it comes to modern kitchen furniture the Europeans are definitely in the forefront. This is true for many kinds of furniture but more so for contemporary kitchen furniture. Some of the most esteemed collections are designed by Europeans, namely: Dali, Bilma, Culinablu, Tenes, Mati, Doga and Volare collections. American modern kitchens are not as innovative nor as sleek as their European counterparts. This reflects on the expectations of the homeowners. Americans in general prefer comfort over style. The kitchen for most American families is a warm place to gather. American designers are incorporating many aspects from the Europeans such as modern kitchen cabinets including the ergonomic design. This style does not however interfere with what most homeowners expect out of their kitchens. While Europeans love glass and metals, most American kitchens will continue to use quality hardwoods in their natural color. This is perhaps one of the biggest differences. Modern kitchen tables and chairs in European design are more so for style than comfort. This is the perspective of anyone who has been raised in an American home. This type of style will rarely appeal to most households with children.

We can assume that modern is indeed relative and modern in terms of American kitchens has more to do with the type of woods used, flooring, lights appliances and color scheme. Modern appliances with a modern color scheme is plenty modern for most American families. There is nothing that is not modern about that. Interior designer’s will  however contend, and they are right to do so, but the only homes with modern European kitchens that would look good will probably be 2 million dollar homes in California, or luxurious apartments in New York City. There are certainly options in which a kitchen can be both modern, practical and comfortable. It will take creativity to achieve, but this is something that homeowners can look forward too because decorating is fun and reflects personal touch and character. You don’t have to sacrifice those beautiful hardwood cherry kitchen cabinets in order to have a modern style. Your kitchen should actually be designed around strong quality hardwoods that will last a very long time. Achieving the modern look can begin by making your kitchen stylish and efficient. Your budget can easily grow so it’s up to you to decide how much you want to accomplish.

Modern kitchen lighting is one of the elements of design that will make a big impact. A beautiful chrome kitchen island pendant will look amazingly modern over a kitchen island with sink or even over a kitchen table.

Modern color scheme will also greatly add to the modern look. You want to focus on colors that are clean and futuristic. You don’t want to go overboard here because whatever color you choose you don’t want it to conflict with your kitchen cabinets. If your cabinets are white or black then you choices will be much more. I will however assume that they are natural wood color. You can either use the monochromatic color scheme or you can use a combination of colors such as ivory, champagne, pearl and a sand color that will go good with the cabinets. You can certainly be much more bolder than this but this is a modern color scheme that will go good with practically any color cabinets.

Modern kitchen furniture including tables, chairs, islands, carts and pantries can also be sleek and comfortable. You can add these gradually to your kitchen. They can be both modern, durable and most of all comfortable. Look for something with clean lines design. The table does not necessarily have to be square or rectangular, it can be round as well. It is advisable to buy the same type and color for all your furniture the uniformity is well worth it. Complimenting your cabinets is how I would go about matters. If you have a few children then consider a modern breakfast nook as well. A rich dark brown color that matches dark brown cabinets would look fabulous.

Modern kitchen accessories are one other way to give your kitchen a modern style. This can be modern kettle, utensils and even putting up a modern wall clock will make a difference. You can definitely have a great looking modern kitchen that is both comfortable and inexpensive.
